Located just beyond the town of Ubud in Bali, Indonesia, Wanakasa is a private residence within the COMO Shambhala Estate. It occupies a 22-acre natural sanctuary nestled within a riverine forest in the heart of Bali. The project is part of the award-winning COMO group, renowned for its deep commitment to holistic wellness and destinations that honour the spirit of place.
The residence, whose name translates to “Forest in the Mist,” takes the form of a luxurious treehouse composed of interconnected suites arranged around an enormous banyan tree. Its distinctive architecture gently draws guests away from the bustling pace of city life and into the tranquillity of nature. The site also holds cultural significance as a traditional place of water purification in Balinese heritage, with a sacred spring and the Ayung River flowing below.
Designed to evoke a sense of home, Wanakasa immerses guests in its surroundings with uninterrupted views of the lush valley and forest beyond. Design studio Atelier Ikebuchi further enhances this connection through a restrained and serene interior language.
Teak floors and ironwood shingle roofs establish the atmosphere of a refined five-star treehouse, while flowing white drapes are paired with classic Balinese furniture and traditional accents, allowing the architecture to harmonise naturally with its environment and cultural context.
Switches and sockets from the LS 990 design range in lacquered mocha were selected to complement the natural aesthetic of the residence, while its lacquered surface gives off a subtle sheen to add a touch of elegance to the space.
KNX building technology has also been integrated throughout the residence, offering guests an intuitive and holistic control system that enhances comfort without detracting from the immersive experience of nature.
