Modern tech meets heritage design at Hotel Indigo Kuala Lumpur on the Park

Explore how smart building technology from JUNG fits seamlessly with reclaimed materials and traditional details of this design-forward hotel.

Nestled next to Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, Hotel Indigo Kuala Lumpur on the Park fuses nature, culture and urban living. Known locally as Pineapple Hill, the forest reserve is the last remaining pocket of untouched primary rainforest in the heart of the city – an apt backdrop for a hotel that celebrates the relationship between natural and man-made environments.

Designed by the G.A Group, Hotel Indigo Kuala Lumpur on the Park is thoughtfully crafted to offer guests a unique, immersive experience. The design interweaves a variety of elements, artworks, and motifs that reflect Malaysia’s multicultural identity, guiding visitors through a narrative of landscape and heritage.

The journey begins on Level 5, where the lobby introduces the hotel’s nature-inspired ethos. Guests are greeted by a striking double-height green wall that immediately sets the tone. Reception desks made from reclaimed tree roots underscore a commitment to sustainability with the clever repurposing of underutilised materials. In the lobby, a sculptural tree installation constructed from glass bottles makes a bold visual statement, championing recycling and creative reuse.

A standout architectural feature in the lobby is the central staircase, constructed from old railway sleepers and rebar salvaged from the construction site. This meaningful gesture not only highlights sustainable practices but also anchors the hotel in its surrounding history.

The hotel’s all-day dining venue, Wok Star, is inspired by the local “mamak” culture and the essence of Malaysia’s street food scene. The bursts of colour and exposed elements of the restaurant create an atmosphere reminiscent of lively street food markets. An urban graffiti mural infuses the venue with energetic vibrancy, while open kitchens take centre stage, creating a theatrical dining experience.

Perched on the 24th floor, the destination restaurant Silver Monkey is named after the native Silver Langur monkey found in the nearby eco-park. Reflecting the community and culture, the space captures the soul of Malay coffee shops through its palette, textures, and communal energy.

Up on the rooftop, the pool and terrace are imagined as a modern interpretation of a forest glade, where sunlight filters through a stylised canopy inspired by the forest’s natural dappled light. This concept is embodied by a stylised architectural metal sunshade that utilises the patterns of the forest canopy, surrounded by green walls and built-in planters, creating a relaxing oasis around the pool, which resembles a forest spring.

Guestrooms are designed to evoke the warmth of a traditional Malaysian family home. The corridors leading to each room take inspiration from the “kaki lima” or five-foot walkways typical of old shophouses. Meanwhile bold overhanging eaves recall those of kampung homes – evoking nostalgia for locals and sparking curiosity in international guests.

The interiors strike a balance between modern elegance and heritage detail: think rattan headboards, floral carpets, and decorative lattices. Dark-toned wood finishes add a sense of weight and refinement, while touches like the traditional dry larder (used to conceal the minibar), and locally inspired details - such as congkak boards and Batu Seremban cloth bags - introduce whimsy and local storytelling.

To complement the wood finishing, the LS 990 design range in lacquered dark aluminium from JUNG was selected to blend seamlessly into the room’s surroundings, allowing key design features to take visual priority. Universal sockets with integrated USB-C ports were installed above the nightstands and at the desks, keeping up with the latest technology demands. Additionally, KNX F 50 push-buttons are positioned by the beds, offering guests intuitive control over various lighting scenes and enhancing the room’s functionality.
