Shed Studio: Appreciating and Respecting Nostalgia

In this inspiration-led series, we asked Edmund Ong and Sheena Sim, co-founders of Shed Studio, to dream up a unique interior concept using mainly items from Space Furniture. Established in 2020, Shed Studio was set up with the aim of creating homes that reflect the unique personalities of their owners. With 13 and 10 years of industry experience, respectively, the duo established their studio at Golden Mile Towers, a nod to their appreciation for old buildings.

Please describe in detail the design in your render. What are the selected items from Space Furniture in your design concept?

The idea behind our render is an imagined study within a cabin in the woods. We had its floors covered in parquet in a geometric pattern and its walls cladded in wood panelling. The vaulted ceiling also has the same wood trimming that matches the walls. The rich tone of the wood finishings helps to provide a sense of warmth and protection from the wild.

The pieces featured here are the ClassiCon Bibendum Chair, selected for its luxurious leather finish and generous volume, paired beside the Tube Light Floor Lamp, which is quite minimal and sleek in contrast. On the other side is the Kartell Adam Wood bookshelves, selected for its exquisite details, and the Flos Foglio which provides a comfortable indirect glow.

Could you describe the uniqueness of your design style and how has it evolved over the years?

Our studio believes that every home should reflect the homeowner’s personalities, and we encourage clients to do so through furniture and lighting pieces that they love, while we as designers create a backdrop for these pieces to shine. We always encourage clients to do just the necessary built-in cabinetry, and to employ loose pieces of furniture whenever possible (think storage furniture). That way, they can bring along these pieces with them when they move. This provides them the flexibility to change things up when their taste or needs change, and also reduces the amount of renovation waste produced.

Over the years we also ventured into the second-hand market, encouraging/helping clients to source for vintage/used pieces from various second-hand stores. These pieces can sometimes be unique/rare finds, or has patina that comes with age.

What kind of meaningful interior design projects would you be keen to work on moving forward?

We have done a number of walk-up projects in Tiong Bahru and really enjoyed them as we have to be extra sensitive to the site with its historical significance, yet at the same time being innovative in creating something new for the clients’ current lifestyle, so we hope for opportunities to work on more projects in other historical and/or iconic buildings/sites.

How does Space Furniture support your design endeavours?

Space Furniture carries a wide range of iconic pieces from various brands and price range, which we can propose to clients. Sales staff are also knowledgeable, so they have been helpful in proposing suitable pieces according to clients’ requirements and needs, reducing the amount of time we spend on searching.

What are some of the furniture brands from Space that have caught your eye recently or inspired you and why?

As a studio, our designs quite often have a nod to nostalgia and so naturally we love brands like B&B, Arflex and Flos with their iconic classic pieces. However we are also excited by younger brands like Bocci where they explore shapes and forms which are unlike anything we’ve seen before.
